Current Host Country: Antigua & Barbuda
Years Abroad: 2 years in present country. 3 years overall.
Occupation: Expat Coach

I moved to my current country because: I am of Antiguan heritage and I was able to register and receive my Antiguan passport, but it is easier and less expensive if you apply on-island.
The Best thing about living in my host country has been:
I have found my inner peace. I never felt this in the US, and I didn't realize how much Black Americans are traumatized on the daily, so when I moved to a country wit the majority of the population being Black like me, it just did something to my mind and mental health.
My favorite experience living here has been…the people! Ugh they are sooo good and so helpful. The locals have really embraced us and I love how I have been able to forge partnerships with some local women.
The three things you need to make it here is: access to cash, to meet the local heavy hitters (especially if you are a business owner), and an “Island Life” demeanor.
If you’re considering living here, you need to leave this at home: the expectation that things can get done quickly. There are some people/businesses who have worked in/with westerners, and they understand the hustle, but most of the things you need to know you won’t find on Google so get to know the locals as quickly as possible.

The biggest lesson I learned as an expat is...
Just chill! You are escaping the US so please allow each country to flourish on its own without the constant comparison to the United States. Try to find something new from your new country to integrate it into your life.
